Matt and I attended the Pownce party at some huge pot-head's house in San Francisco last Friday. We were part of the prestigious Nick Douglas entourage, which gave us all the cred we needed to get in. Considering what uncov said about this startup just a few weeks ago, Matt and I were unsure of what kind of reception awaited us.
We were assaulted with hugs from Leah Culver upon arrival. I then handed her a fresh six pack of Mike's Hard Lemonade as a sort of peace offering, and because I figured the wimmin would want some. What happened next was truly bizarre. Culver took out her iPhone, flicked her way to some "Lip Gloss" song and gave me an earbud. She proceeded to dance and lip sync the song while Douglas videotaped, confused party goers looked on and yours truly felt like a deer in headlights. I'm sure the video will be posted soon, and even then, it still won't make sense.
As we were introduced to Leah, she asked "Where's the guy thats kind of a dick?" We told her Ted couldn't make it, and that probably turned out to be a good thing. He was busy drinking SoCo out of a paper bag up on Nob Hill. (true story)
We spent the rest of the evening drinking 7&7s and talking with Web 2.0. Everyone seemed to really take to uncov, which surprised us. However, not all were pleased with our presence. Someone tapped Kris Tate on the shoulder and said "I heard the uncov guys are here." Matt overheard this and let them know it was us. Imagine Tate as Professor Frink from the Simpsons turning to us and boldy saying "Fuck you guys!" It was hilarious.
So what about Pownce? Culver was excited as all get out about their growth. She whipped out her iPhone and drunkenly showed me their internal stats, which revealed 45,078 users of the service. That's impressive, considering they launched in this crazy invite-only mode only a couple of weeks ago. They have six servers in a co-lo and are apparently scaling fine. Leah also showed me the Alexa graph of Pownce vs. the competition and they are cleary growing quickly. She also claimed that they won't have any scaling problems like Twitter because they're not using Ruby, which I thought was a pretty good burn. Regarding Pownce's plans for mobile integration, don't expect a short-code to text anytime soon. More power to Pownce for their growth. It still doesn't have to be on the internet, but if you can get people to use it and find an exit, then do it.
