Finally, one of you tards has figured out that JavaScript and CSS do not constitute a rich development platform! Screencast-o-Matic is a Java applet that will record and export a screencast.
It's very Web 1.0, but you know what? It fucking works. And it works well. Of course, I make screencasts round about never, but still, if you're the type who likes to broadcast your desktop activity to the world, then you can go apeshit here.
There's a little bit of AdSense on the right hand side, but it's not really noticeable. The site layout itself is gloriously unpolished, cutting through shiny Web 2.0 bullshit with the white hot blade of intelligent engineering.
The baboon at TechCrunch who reviewed it was bitching about YouTube integration. Who fuckin' cares? You can export the screencast to a Quicktime file and do what you please with it. You can even edit it up and add effects using your pirated copy of Final Cut Pro. He also bitched about the UI feeling a little clunky, but you know what? After reviewing all of these rounded-box-corner, sans-serif shitheaps, seeing some old school HTML design is a relief. Keep it up.
Yeah, so their use cases are somewhat limited. I don't think people are making enough screencasts for this to be profitable. If it goes tits up, though, they could just release it as a freeware Java app. That'd be cool. It's nice to have something like this that works cross platform, even though it is web based.
So, Big Nerd Software, you've grown a pair. Nice work.
