Social networking has finally gotten so large that it's eating itself. Today I discovered a social network for fat people. Yes, that's right: fat people. Fatsecret.com is a place for fatties all around the world to share their weight loss experience with one another. You make friends, try out their diets, and hopefully lose weight. Is this for real?
It looks like there is a social network springing up for every niche market. Facebook for students, Myspace for kids who cut themselves, Orkut for Brazilians, and now Fatsecret for people who can't put the fries down. Building communities like this is nothing new. In my day, we called it IRC. I guess text got complicated and now we need Flash, but that is beside the point: it's a social network for fat people!
When I first saw this I was laughing so hard I started to cry. If nothing else, Web 2.0 is an endless source of entertainment for people like me.
Fatsecret is pretty slim on the Javascript. I like that. A little bit of Flash here and there, but that's nothing to get my panties up in a twist about. I do have to wonder, though: Is a social network generator a valid Web 2.0 startup? You'd input your target community, and it would generate the code you need to launch a social network for that group. It's probably like 100 lines of Rails code.
What's next? Social networks for lepers? LeperColony...it does have a nice ring to it.
Thinking of joining Fatsecret? I won't tell you it's a bad idea, but I will tell you this: stop eating so damn much and get off your fat lazy ass. That's the miracle diet that's worked for me in the past. It can work for you, too.
