Disqus: OK, Now We're Getting Somewhere

Disqus is a web app that will handle your blog's comments. They take care of accounts, threading, spam, and storage: all the bullshit you don't want to handle. I would let it handle the comments for Uncov if I weren't the laziest blogger alive. Make an iframe? No thanks, I'd rather sit on the couch and stare at the wall.

If Dave Winer Likes It, It Must Be Good

I did try out Disqus on a roll-your-own blog, and it works very well. It handles UTF-8 that extends beyond the ASCII codepoints, lets you upvote and downvote comments in the Reddit style, and most importantly, has threads.

One thing that pisses me off about most blogging software, like WordPress for example, is the lack of threading in the comments. I understand. SQL-wise, threads are kind of a pain in the balls to implement, so it's no surprise that WordPress, a PHP regurgitation, doesn't do it. Yeah, there's a plugin for it, but who gives a shit?

These guys did take YCombinator's chump change as angel funding, though. Ah, fuck it. I see the opportunity for them to do something that very few companies in Silicon Valley can accomplish: build a stable and reasonably sized small business. If their spam detection doesn't suck, they could start eating Automattic's lunch.

If Disqus starts charging for their software, people would pay. If they supported inline images in the comment threads, I might consider buying it. Consider. Let't not start sucking eachother's dicks just yet.

You're probably wondering why I'm creaming myself over some retarded blog comment system. It's because Disqus is the first reasonable program I have seen come out of Web 2.0. They aren't trying to revolutionize shit. It's a simple app, build on Django, doing the type of stuff Django was designed to do. Yes, Pownce is also built on Django, but you don't see the Disqus founders posting on blogs, asking how to round floating point numbers.

It's All About Makin' That X-M-L

Oh, right. They let you export the comments to XML if you want to take your data elsewhere.

Maybe I will install it on Uncov. It would calm some of the ass-hattery in the comments.
